ИГРА-ПУТЕШЕСТВИЕ     "Наша прекрасная планета" (8-9 классы)

Игра-путешествие проводится как внеклассное мероприятие в рамках недели английского языка. Данное мероприятие не только углубляет и расширяет знания иностранного языка, но и способствует также расширению культурологического кругозора школьников, развитию их творческой активности, эстетического вкуса и, как следствие, повышает мотивацию к изучению языка и культуры другой страны.

Игра начинается с вступительного слова ведущего: Hello, dear friends! We have gathered here to participate in the game-travelling "Our Wonderful Planet".

We live on a really wonderful, beautiful, green and blue, friendly and warm planet called Earth. More than 6 billion people live on it, there are many beautiful places on it: rivers, lakes, seas, forests, deserts, mountains.

What can be better than your own native land? In the 17-th century Yerofei Khabarov undertook an expedition to the Amur river and was overwhelmed by the taiga animals - Manchurian tigers, Asiatic black bears, squirrels. Along the banks was wonderful vegetation - birches, oaks, cedars. Following his advice, people settled and developed once wild country: they built bridges, roads, plants and houses and now produce the black and red caviar famous throughout the world.

But the man always wants to see not only his land, he wants to visit other places, towns, cities, to meet new friends, to try new food. It makes our life more interesting, full of impressions and emotions. Why not travelling? I invite you to make a short tour around our planet together with English.

1. The Map of the World.

1.1 Quiz-game.

Example: - What are the kingdoms of the UK and their capitals?

- What is Lake District famous for? (Lochness Monster)

- Where did the Beatles come from?

- The UK has the land border with 1 country. What is it?

- How is the "Dream Factory" in the USA called?

- What English-speaking country is the native land of ice-hockey?  and so on.

1.2 Guess the place, show it on the map.

- This huge iron tower is in the capital of France. It is one of the most famous sights in the world. Name the city and the tower. (Eiffel Tower, Paris)

- It is one still existing world wonder. The Great Sphinx guards it. It is one of the most attractive sights for Russian tourists.Name the country and the wonder.(Egypt, Piramids)

- This lake is the deepest and the purest in the world. Many rivers flow into it, and only one flows out. Name the country and the lake. (Russia, the Baikal)

- This city in the south of Europe is also famous for its tower. But it's not ordinary. It doesn't stay straight, but it is known as the falling tower. Name the country and the tower. (Italy, The Tower of Piza)

- The highest mountain in Africa. (Kilimangaro)

- The longest river in Africa. (the Nile)

- The smallest ocean on Earth. (the Indian)

- The biggest island in the world. (Greenland) and so on.

2. The Animals. Our planet is rich in different kinds of animals, birds, sea-creatures, fruit and vegetable. Northern areas are rich in the polar bear, sable, polar fox, seal, walrus, whale, wolf, reindeer and many others. Various species of birds and fishes are numerous. The southern areas are the habitats of such representatives of fauna as the lion, leopard, desert lynx, hyena, fox, wild goat, red deer, bison, various kinds of snakes and birds. Let us see how many of them you know.

2.1  Name the animals in order one by one, those who name the last animal wins!

2.2 You have a piece of paper with the names of animals. Choose the animal or bird which doesn't match the group.

2.3 Now anagrams. What are these animals?

3. Travelling. I like to travel. Long walks in the country are called hikes. It's such a pleasure to take rucksacks, not to think about tickets, not to hurry up and walk a lot.

I like to travel by car, because I can see many things in a short time. I don't take a ticket and I don't carry my things, everything I need is in the car.

It's comfortable to travel by train or by plane. I don't spend a lot of time going from one place to another. I hope you'll join me in my travelling. Let's choose the transport.

3.1 Divide the following means of transport into 3 groups (air, land, water)

3.2 Match the word from the left with one from the right to form a compound noun. (for example, excess + baggage = excess - baggage

4. Holidays. Different traditions, manners, holidays... They make a nation special. Some of them are old-fashioned and few people remember them, others are part of people's life. Sure, you know more or less about traditions and celebrations, and there are some things that are strange to you.

4.1 Translate the names of the Russian, English and American holidays (in turn).

(for example, New Year's Day, Epiphany, St. Valentine's Day, Shrovetide, St. Patrick's Day, Palm Sunday (Pussy-willow Sunday), Easter Sunday, Columbus Day, Independence Day and so on.)

4.2 Guess the holiday by its short description.

(for example, It's a yearly celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This holiday means the beginning of the new year and the new life. (Christmas)

It's a day for fun. On this holiday it's possible to play jokes on friends, parents, relatives and teachers if they have a sense of humor. (All Fools' Day, the 1-st of April) and so on.)
